AT & T recently began to start the big push to promote its 4G network and phones. Its web site features the company, "With 4G AT & T, you can do more, do more and enjoy more of what is already the country's fastest mobile broadband network."
Sounds great, but be sure to read the fine print.
Buried in the bottom of the page reads: "4G 4G speeds require a device and delivered when HSPA + technology is combined with more backhaul. 4G speeds available in limited areas with increasing availability by deploying backhaul in progress. "
Earlier this year, AT & T announced it had deployed HSPA + to virtually 100% of its mobile broadband network, but only a handful of cities have advanced to provide backhaul for 4G speeds. Apparently, about a dozen markets have speeds according to AT & T 4G network map.

We do not know when the speed of 4G is coming to other markets, but AT & T says they hope to have 2 / 3 of its mobile traffic is delivered over its network of higher return in late 2011.
